I'll allow the Italians their victory, but I disagree calling Zidane a thug. I don't want to rain on the parade, but I'll be very surprised if Matarazzi doesn't come out of this thing looking like an asshole. Zidane apologized for the action to everybody but the assailed, and I thought during the time that he had to have heard something pretty terrible to provoke him like that.

But otherwise congrats.

ok, and it was very 'unsportsmanlike' of both of them to participate in the actions leading up to and the action itself... but really, words are words, and if the italian - or maybe more than the one - felt that they had to use these mental tactics to knock him off his game, surely he should have recognized that and not taken it to heart? i mean, that type of behaviour is entirely inappropriate, no matter what comes out of someone's mouth. (nevermind that figo also headbutted someone - and didn't get called on it - i think portugal, aside from the diving, can do no wrong)

interestingly, i've heard two very different stories about what it was that did come out of the italian's mouth before the act in question: one was that zidane was called a terrorist, the other was that rude things about zidane's female family members were said. the latter was a later account, but supposedly from zidane himself; the former was from a family member. it's been speculated that this may have been an attempt at depoliticizing the whole thing. interesting.

i think italy deserved it, if only because france's keeper was crap. penalties are a crap way to decide such a match, though, and i'm pretty bitter about that.

i'll be in NC in about two weeks - s, will you be around?
